Loved for its vibrant colors and unique fin extensions, these cichlids add a touch of elegance to freshwater aquariums. Explore the key features and care guidelines that make Apistogramma cacatuoides a sought-after choice among aquarists.

We have both male and female available and if two are purchased we will do our best to select a pair.

Key Features:
- Vibrant Coloration: Cockatoo Cichlids are adorned with striking colors, including hues of orange, yellow, and red. Males often exhibit more intense colors, especially during courtship displays.
- Dorsal Fin Extensions: One of the distinguishing features is the elongated dorsal fin in males, resembling the crest of a cockatoo. This feature adds to their unique and charismatic appearance.
- Territorial Behavior: These cichlids are known for their territorial nature, particularly during breeding. Providing adequate hiding places is essential to minimize aggression.

Tank Essentials:
- Adequate Tank Size: Offer a tank of at least 65L for a pair or a small group of Apistogramma cacatuoides. Ensure the tank has hiding spots and territories for each fish.
- Cave Structures: Mimic their natural habitat by incorporating caves, driftwood, and plants. Cockatoo Cichlids appreciate hiding spots for security.
- Soft Substrate: Use a substrate of fine sand or smooth gravel to replicate their native environment. These cichlids may sift through the substrate in search of food.

Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a stable tropical temperature between 22-28°C.
- Soft, Acidic Water: Cockatoo Cichlids prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. Aim for a pH range between 6.0 and 7.0.

Feeding Routine:
Apistogramma cacatuoides are omnivores. Offer a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, flakes, and occasional treats of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or small insects.

Compatibility:
While generally peaceful, these cichlids can become territorial, especially during breeding. Keep them with other non-aggressive community fish of similar size. Avoid overly aggressive tankmates.

Breeding Behavior:
Witness fascinating breeding behaviors, including courtship displays and the care of fry by the female. Provide ample hiding spots such as coconut huts and ensure water conditions are suitable for breeding.
