Can I Request Certain Plants?
Absolutely.
If there is a particular plant you'd love, a plant you'd rather avoid, or something specific you're trying to achieve with your aquarium, leave us a note with your order.
We'll do our best to accommodate requests based on the plants available at the time.
Because our plant stock changes quickly, specific species cannot always be guaranteed.
Do I Need CO₂?
This pack is designed around easier aquarium plants rather than demanding high-tech species.
Many of the plants commonly selected can be grown without injected CO₂ in a suitably set-up aquarium.
Adding CO₂ can improve plant growth, but you do not need to build a high-tech CO₂ system just to start keeping aquarium plants.
What Lighting Do I Need?
Most plants selected for this pack are chosen because they are relatively forgiving.
A reasonable aquarium LED light is generally a good starting point. Plant growth will still depend on factors such as lighting strength, lighting duration, nutrients and the individual species included.
If you're using an extremely basic aquarium light or you're unsure whether your lighting is suitable, contact us and we can point you in the right direction.
Can I Plant Them in Gravel or Sand?
Many of the commonly included stem plants can be grown in standard aquarium gravel or sand.
Root-feeding plants generally benefit from additional nutrients underneath them, such as root tabs or aquarium plant fertiliser.
For a more heavily planted aquarium, a nutrient-rich planted aquarium substrate can make plant growth easier.
How Do I Plant Them?
For most bunch-style stem plants:
-
Carefully remove any packaging or weights.
-
Separate the stems where appropriate.
-
Plant the lower section of each stem individually into your substrate.
-
Leave a small amount of space between stems so light can reach the lower growth.
-
Avoid burying leaves underneath the substrate.
Planting individual stems rather than pushing an entire bunch into one hole generally gives them more room to establish and grow.
Simply Fish Recommends
If you've never kept aquarium plants before, start here rather than overthinking it.
We've deliberately made this pack inexpensive and straightforward. You get a selection of plants to experiment with, learn what grows well in your aquarium and start filling out your tank without spending heavily on individual plants.
For most beginners, we'd pair the pack with a decent aquarium light and a simple aquarium plant fertiliser. You can always add more advanced equipment later if you decide to take the planted-tank side of the hobby further.
FAQ
How many plants do I receive?
You receive five plant selections. These are generally bunches containing approximately 3–4 stems or an individual plant depending on the species.
Are all five plants different?
We aim to provide a useful selection based on the healthy stock available when your order is packed. If variety is particularly important to you, leave us a note with your order.
Can I choose the exact plants?
You can request particular plants and we'll do our best, but we cannot guarantee individual species because plant availability changes quickly.
Is this suitable for a brand-new aquarium?
Yes. It's designed specifically as an easy starting point for people wanting to introduce live plants to a freshwater aquarium.
Do I need CO₂?
Not necessarily. We focus on easier plants, many of which can be grown without injected CO₂.
Do I need aquarium fertiliser?
Plants need nutrients to grow. A suitable liquid fertiliser and, where appropriate, root fertiliser can help considerably.
Is this enough plants for my aquarium?
For smaller aquariums or someone wanting to start experimenting with plants, it's a great starting point. If you're trying to heavily plant a larger aquarium from day one, we'd recommend looking at our Mega Aquarium Plant Pack instead.
