Seachem Stability is a beneficial-bacteria supplement designed to help establish and support the biological filter in freshwater and marine aquariums.
It contains a blend of bacteria that help process aquarium waste through the nitrogen cycle, including ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

What Does Seachem Stability Actually Do?
Your aquarium filter doesn't just physically trap dirt.
A huge part of its job is providing a home for beneficial bacteria that process waste produced by fish, uneaten food and other organic material.
In a new aquarium, that bacterial population isn't properly established yet.
Stability introduces beneficial bacteria to help establish and support this biological filtration.
This is particularly important because toxic ammonia and nitrite can build up when an aquarium does not yet have enough biological filtration to handle the amount of waste being produced.
Does Stability Instantly Cycle an Aquarium?
This is one of the most common questions we get.
We would not treat Stability as a magic bottle that makes water instantly safe regardless of what your test results say.
It helps establish the bacteria required for biological filtration, but every aquarium cycles differently.
Even when using Stability, we recommend testing:
during the cycling process.
The goal is to establish a biological filter capable of consistently processing the waste produced by your livestock.
Don't assume a tank is fully cycled simply because you've finished seven days of Stability.
How Do I Use Seachem Stability?
Shake well before use.
For a new aquarium:
Day 1:
Dose 5mL per 40 litres of aquarium water.
Days 2–7:
Dose 5mL per 80 litres once per day.

If you're unsure, slightly overestimating the Stability dose is generally far less concerning than underestimating the ammonia and nitrite in an uncycled aquarium.
Which Bottle Size Should I Buy?
For the complete initial seven-day dosing programme, you will use approximately 0.5mL of Stability for every litre of aquarium volume.
That makes choosing a bottle pretty easy.

Stability vs Prime – What's the Difference?
These two products are often bought together, but they do different jobs.
Seachem Prime
Prime is a concentrated water conditioner.
We use Prime primarily when adding tap water because it removes chlorine and chloramine and can temporarily detoxify ammonia and nitrite.
Seachem Stability
Stability adds beneficial bacteria designed to help establish and support the biological filter.
A simple way to think about it is:
Prime = makes tap water safe and helps protect against toxic compounds
Stability = helps establish the bacteria that biologically process waste
For a new freshwater aquarium, we very commonly use the two together.
Stability vs Seachem AmGuard
If you already have a significant ammonia problem, Stability isn't necessarily the only product you need.
Stability supports the biological bacteria that process ammonia.
Seachem AmGuard is specifically designed for emergency ammonia detoxification.
If your aquarium is showing measurable ammonia, test the water properly and address the cause rather than simply adding more bacteria and hoping for the best.
Where Should I Add Stability?
You can dose Stability directly into the aquarium.
For a new filter or after filter maintenance, we also like getting some of the product into the area around the filter intake so water carrying the bacteria passes through the biological media.
Good biological filter media provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise.
Should I Turn Off My UV Steriliser?
Yes.
If you're using Stability during the seven-day cycling programme, turn off UV sterilisation and ozone while dosing.
UV and ozone can kill or damage the bacteria you're trying to introduce.
For routine Stability dosing after adding fish or performing a water change, Seachem recommends keeping UV/ozone off for at least 24 hours.
Does Stability Need to Be Refrigerated?
No.
Stability does not need refrigeration.
The bacteria remain in a dormant state inside the bottle and become active after being introduced into the aquarium.
Store the bottle normally and keep the lid closed between uses.
Can I Overdose Stability?
Stability has a very wide safety margin.
Seachem states that it is difficult to seriously overdose the product.
A very large dose may occasionally contribute to a temporary bacterial bloom that makes the water appear cloudy, but this generally clears.
That said, there's still no reason to waste product unnecessarily — follow the recommended dosing schedule.
Can I Add Fish While Using Stability?
Seachem states that livestock can be introduced while following the seven-day Stability dosing programme.
Our Simply Fish recommendation is still to use your test kit rather than relying entirely on the bottle.
Every aquarium is different.
Tank size, number of fish, filtration, feeding, temperature and existing bacterial population all affect how quickly the biological filter establishes.
Particularly with a new aquarium, monitor ammonia and nitrite carefully.
How Long Does an Aquarium Take to Cycle?
There is no exact number of days that applies to every aquarium.
Seachem notes that many aquariums take roughly 4–6 weeks to fully cycle even though the initial Stability dosing programme lasts seven days.
That's an important distinction.
Seven days of dosing does not automatically mean the aquarium has completed the nitrogen cycle.
Test the water and let the aquarium tell you when the biological filter is ready.
