2HR Aquarist APT Fix is a highly effective aquarium algae treatment designed to target stubborn algae while being gentle on your planted aquarium when used as directed. It is especially popular for treating Black Beard Algae, hair algae and algae growing on hardscape such as driftwood, rocks and aquarium décor.
In a healthy planted tank, strong plant growth is the best natural defence against algae. But aquariums are living systems, and small disruptions can quickly give algae the upper hand. A clogged filter, inconsistent CO2, excess feeding, decaying leaves or a missed maintenance routine can all weaken plant health and create the perfect window for algae to take hold.
APT Fix helps rebalance the aquarium by targeting one of algae’s biggest weaknesses — its less developed protective cell walls. When spot-dosed correctly, it quickly arrests algae growth, giving your plants time to recover and regain control.

Copper-Free Aquarium Algae Treatment
Many aquarium algae treatments use copper-based compounds. Copper is a powerful biocide, but it can accumulate over time and potentially cause long-term damage to your aquarium’s ecosystem.
APT Fix is different. It uses an active compound that naturally biodegrades within 24 hours, leaving no harmful copper residue behind. This makes it a smarter option for planted aquariums where long-term tank health matters.
Best Used For
APT Fix is best used for targeted algae control, especially on:
Black Beard Algae, also known as BBA
Hair algae
Algae on aquarium wood
Algae on rocks and hardscape
Localised algae growth on tougher plant leaves
For best results on plants, spot-dose directly onto the affected area. To increase effectiveness, pause your filter briefly while dosing, then turn it back on once dosing is complete.
Important Plant Safety Notes
Avoid direct treatment on sensitive plants such as mosses, liverworts, Riccardia, Riccia and Vallisneria, also known as Tape Grass. These plants can be more sensitive to direct algae treatments.
For algae growing on hardscape, APT Fix can be applied directly to affected wood and rocks. This is one of the most effective ways to remove algae from hard surfaces in the aquarium.
Long-Term Algae Control
APT Fix is excellent for killing and weakening existing algae, but the long-term solution is a healthy, balanced planted aquarium.
The best natural defence against algae is strong, dominant plant mass. Tanks with large open, unplanted areas are far more prone to algae problems, much like open fields invite weeds. As a general rule, aim to have around 70% of your substrate planted. With the right light, nutrients and maintenance, healthy plants will naturally outcompete algae.
Organic waste is one of the biggest algae triggers. Avoid overstocking newer aquariums, especially tanks under three months old, and remove decaying leaves before they break down. Regular water changes, good filtration, stable CO2 and healthy plant growth all help prevent algae from returning.
What To Expect
After a successful spot dose, Black Beard Algae will often change colour within a couple of days, usually turning red, pink, grey or white as it dies back. Over the following days, the dead algae may break down naturally, be eaten by algae grazers, or be removed manually.
For hair algae, APT Fix can weaken and deactivate the algae, making it much easier to remove with a fine brush or regular maintenance tools.
Directions
Use only as directed on the bottle. For spot dosing, apply directly to affected areas and avoid overdosing. For extra effectiveness, briefly pause filtration while spot dosing, then turn it back on immediately after treatment.
