Aqua One Ocellaris 1400 UVC Canister Filter – 1400L/hr
The Aqua One Ocellaris 1400 UVC is a powerful external canister filter designed for aquariums approximately 250–400 litres.
It combines mechanical and biological filtration with a built-in UVC steriliser/clarifier, making it an excellent option for larger aquariums where you want strong filtration, generous media capacity and additional help controlling free-floating algae.
With a maximum flow rate of 1400L/hr, three media baskets and 13 litres of filter volume, the Ocellaris 1400 UVC provides plenty of room to customise your filtration media to suit your aquarium.
Why Choose the Ocellaris 1400 UVC?
The Ocellaris 1400 UVC is a great step up from smaller internal or canister filters when you're running a larger aquarium and want more filtration capacity.
Its built-in UVC unit helps control free-floating algae and microorganisms passing through the filter, making it particularly useful for aquariums that struggle with green water.
The filter also includes mechanical and biological media from the box, so you don't need to build a complete media setup separately before getting started.
Other useful features include Aqua One's Quick Release Tap System for easier maintenance and a manual primer to help get the filter running again after servicing.
Who Is It For?
We recommend the Ocellaris 1400 UVC for medium to large aquariums in the 250–400L range.
It's suitable for:
Tropical freshwater aquariums
Coldwater aquariums
Planted aquariums
Marine aquariums
Larger community tanks
Aquariums where additional filtration capacity is required
Tanks where green water or free-floating algae is an ongoing problem
For heavily stocked aquariums, we'd generally lean towards choosing more filtration capacity rather than running a filter right at the upper edge of its recommended aquarium size.
Which Ocellaris UVC Model Should I Buy?
Ocellaris 850 UVC Best suited to aquariums approximately 150–250L.
Ocellaris 1400 UVC Best suited to aquariums approximately 250–400L.
Ocellaris 3000 UVC Best suited to larger aquariums approximately 400–600L.
For most tanks around 250–350L, the 1400 UVC is the obvious choice.
If your aquarium is approaching 400L and is heavily stocked with larger or messy fish, we'd consider stepping up to the 3000 UVC rather than choosing filtration based solely on the maximum tank rating.
What Does the UVC Steriliser Do?
The integrated UVC unit exposes water passing through the filter to ultraviolet light.
This is particularly useful for controlling free-floating algae responsible for green water and reducing certain free-floating microorganisms passing through the filter.
UVC should be viewed as an additional water-clarity tool rather than a replacement for good mechanical and biological filtration, sensible stocking and regular aquarium maintenance.
Filter Media Included
The Ocellaris range comes supplied with:
Filter wool
Mechanical filter sponges
Sintered glass biological media
The three media baskets can also be customised if you want to use different biological, mechanical or chemical filtration media.
This gives you considerably more flexibility than a basic internal filter with fixed media cartridges.
How Do I Maintain It?
Canister filters should be maintained whenever flow begins to noticeably decrease or the media becomes heavily loaded with waste.
For routine maintenance:
Switch the filter off.
Use the Quick Release Tap System to disconnect the filter from the aquarium.
Open the canister and inspect the filter media.
Clean mechanical sponges and replace fine filter wool where required.
Clean the intake, outlet and hoses if flow has reduced.
Reassemble the filter and make sure all seals and O-rings are correctly positioned.
Reconnect the hoses.
Use the manual primer to restart water flow before returning the filter to normal operation.
Avoid unnecessarily replacing all biological media at once, as this media houses beneficial bacteria that form an important part of your aquarium's biological filtration.

Replacement Media & Parts
One advantage of the Ocellaris range is that replacement components and filter media are available separately.
Replacement items available for the Ocellaris 1400/1400 UVC include filter wool, coarse and fine sponges, impeller components, taps and UVC replacement lamps.
Keeping reusable sponges, seals and moving components maintained will help keep the filter performing properly long term.
Simply Fish Recommends
For a 250–350L freshwater aquarium, we think the Ocellaris 1400 UVC offers a very strong combination of filtration capacity, price and ease of maintenance.
The biggest reason we'd choose the UVC model over the standard Ocellaris 1400 is the built-in UV clarifier. If you've previously dealt with green water, want an additional layer of water clarification, or simply like having UVC available when required, the additional cost makes sense.
If you have a straightforward aquarium and don't need UVC, the standard Ocellaris 1400 gives you the same basic 1400L/hr filtration class without paying for the UVC feature.
For aquariums approaching 400L with a heavy fish load, we'd look seriously at moving up to a larger filter rather than running the 1400 at the very top of its rated range.
FAQ
What size aquarium is the Ocellaris 1400 UVC suitable for? Aqua One rates the Ocellaris 1400 UVC for aquariums approximately 250–400 litres.
Does the Ocellaris 1400 UVC include filter media? Yes. It comes with filter wool, sponges and sintered glass biological media, giving you mechanical and biological filtration straight from the box.
What is the difference between the Ocellaris 1400 and 1400 UVC? The key difference is the integrated UVC steriliser/clarifier in the UVC model. This provides additional help controlling free-floating algae and microorganisms passing through the filter.
Will the UVC get rid of green aquarium water? UVC is particularly useful for free-floating algae, which is a common cause of green water. The underlying cause should still be addressed if excessive light or nutrients are contributing to the problem.
Is the Ocellaris 1400 UVC suitable for marine aquariums? Yes. Aqua One lists the Ocellaris UVC range as suitable for coldwater, tropical and marine aquariums.
How many media baskets does it have? The Ocellaris 1400 UVC has three media baskets and a total filter volume of 13 litres.
Should I choose the 850 UVC or 1400 UVC? The 850 UVC is rated for approximately 150–250L aquariums, while the 1400 UVC is rated for approximately 250–400L. If you're close to the crossover point or have a heavily stocked aquarium, we'd generally favour the larger model.
