Aqua One NanoReef 80 – 80L All-in-One Marine Aquarium
The Aqua One NanoReef 80 is an 80-litre all-in-one marine aquarium designed to make getting into saltwater and reef keeping considerably easier.
Instead of having to choose a tank, filtration system, heater, light and protein skimmer separately, the NanoReef 80 brings the major equipment together into one compact 45cm cube.
With OptiClear glass, integrated rear filtration and a clean rimless-style presentation, it's an excellent starting point for someone wanting a small reef aquarium without immediately building a large and complicated marine system.
What's Included?
The Aqua One NanoReef 80 comes complete with:
80L OptiClear glass aquarium
Removable glass lids
LED aquarium light
Integrated rear filtration system
Protein skimmer
Adjustable glass heater
Filter media
That covers a significant amount of the equipment normally required when building a marine aquarium from individual components.
Why Choose the NanoReef 80?
The biggest advantage is simplicity.
Starting a marine aquarium can quickly become overwhelming when you're trying to work out which:
Aquarium
Filter
Return pump
Heater
Light
Protein skimmer
all work together.
The NanoReef 80 gives you a complete base system designed to operate together from the start.
We think it makes particular sense for someone who wants to experience reef keeping without immediately committing the space and money required for a large marine aquarium.
Who Is It For?
We recommend the NanoReef 80 for:
First-time marine aquarium owners
Customers moving from freshwater into saltwater
Small reef aquariums
Soft coral setups
Selected LPS coral setups
Small marine fish
Shrimp, snails and other suitable reef invertebrates
Experienced reef keepers wanting a compact secondary tank
It is still a marine aquarium, so don't confuse "all-in-one" with "maintenance-free."
The equipment is easier to organise, but good reef keeping still depends on stable salinity, water quality, appropriate stocking and regular maintenance.
How Big Is It?
Volume: 80L Dimensions: 45cm long × 45cm deep × 45cm high Colour: Black Suitable For: Marine and coral reef aquariums
Its cube footprint gives you good front-to-back depth for creating a proper reef aquascape rather than simply stacking rock against the back wall.
Integrated Filtration
The rear filtration system keeps much of the equipment out of the main display area.
The integrated filtration provides:
Mechanical filtration
Biological filtration
Chemical filtration
This means you can keep the main display relatively clean while filter media and other equipment are housed in the rear section.
As the aquarium develops, you can also adjust the media you use depending on what the tank needs.
Protein Skimmer Included
The NanoReef 80 includes a protein skimmer.
Protein skimming helps remove dissolved organic waste from saltwater before more of that waste breaks down inside the aquarium.
For a small reef tank, having a skimmer included from the beginning is a major advantage compared with buying a basic aquarium and then trying to find a compact skimmer that fits afterwards.
Lighting
The included LED lighting is designed for the NanoReef system and includes:
Dimmable operation
Multiple lighting settings
Dedicated blue-light setting
The blue-light mode can also make coral fluorescence particularly noticeable.
Exactly what coral you should keep will still depend on its individual lighting requirements, placement in the aquarium and the overall maturity of the system.
Heater Included
The NanoReef 80 includes an adjustable glass aquarium heater.
The heater helps maintain the stable tropical temperature required by marine fish and reef livestock.
We still strongly recommend using a separate aquarium thermometer.
Don't rely entirely on the setting printed on any heater dial — check the actual water temperature.
What Else Do I Need?
Although this is an all-in-one aquarium, you still need additional equipment and consumables to establish a functioning reef.
At minimum, we'd plan for:
Marine salt
RO/DI water
Reef rock
Marine substrate if desired
Refractometer or reliable salinity tester
Marine water test kits
Beneficial bacteria/cycling products
Thermometer
Basic maintenance equipment
Suitable marine food once livestock is added
Depending on how far you take the reef, you may eventually also consider:
Additional circulation/wavemaker
Automatic top-off system
Upgraded reef lighting
Dosing equipment
Additional filter media
Coral supplements
You don't necessarily need to buy every possible reef accessory on day one.
Get the fundamentals right first.
RO/DI Water – We Strongly Recommend It
For a reef aquarium, we'd recommend starting with RO/DI water rather than untreated tap water.
Marine aquariums are less forgiving of unwanted nutrients and dissolved contaminants, particularly once you start keeping corals.
Using RO/DI water gives you a much more controlled starting point when mixing saltwater.
Simply Fish also offers RO/DI water if you don't have your own filtration system.
How Do I Set It Up?
A basic setup process looks like:
Position the aquarium on a strong, perfectly level surface.
Rinse equipment and substrate where appropriate.
Install the filtration, heater, skimmer and included equipment.
Add your reef rock/aquascape.
Add properly mixed saltwater.
Start the filtration and circulation.
Check and adjust salinity.
Bring the aquarium to the correct temperature.
Begin the aquarium cycling process.
Test ammonia and nitrite.
Allow the biological filtration to establish.
Add livestock gradually once the aquarium is ready.
Do not fill the tank with fish and coral on day one.
The aquarium needs time to establish biologically.
Don't Forget the Filter Media Packaging
Before starting the aquarium, open the rear filter and check all of the supplied filter media.
If any biological or chemical media is sealed inside plastic packaging, remove the plastic before operating the filter.
It sounds ridiculously obvious, but customers leaving filter media inside its packaging happens more often than you'd think.
Check everything before the first startup rather than assuming every piece of media is ready to use straight from the box.
What Fish Can I Keep?
This is an 80L nano reef, so livestock selection matters.
We'd focus on small marine fish rather than trying to squeeze fish designed for much larger aquariums into an 80L cube.
Potential options depending on compatibility and final stocking may include:
Selected Clownfish
Small Gobies
Firefish
Small Blennies
Other genuinely nano-suitable marine species
The exact number and combination depends heavily on:
Adult fish size
Territorial behaviour
Waste production
Aquascape
Filtration
Whether you're also keeping coral and invertebrates
Marine fish often need considerably more consideration than simply calculating "litres per fish."
Talk to us before buying livestock if you're unsure.
Can I Keep Clownfish?
Yes, selected Clownfish can work very well in a NanoReef 80.
A pair of suitable smaller Clownfish can make a great centrepiece for a compact reef aquarium.
However, don't assume every Clownfish species or every combination of marine fish is suitable simply because juvenile fish happen to fit in the tank when you buy them.
Always plan around adult size and temperament.
What Corals Can I Keep?
The NanoReef 80 can be used to build a proper reef aquarium.
For someone getting started, we'd generally look toward easier corals first.
Examples may include suitable:
Zoanthids
Mushrooms
Leather corals
Selected soft corals
Easier LPS corals
Coral requirements vary enormously.
Some corals need much stronger lighting, more flow and tighter water-chemistry control than others.
If you're new to reef keeping, build confidence with forgiving species before filling the aquarium with demanding coral.
Is a Nano Reef Easier Than a Large Reef?
Not necessarily.
It's cheaper, more compact and easier to perform a water change on, but smaller water volumes can also change faster.
For example:
Salinity rises faster through evaporation
Temperature can change faster
Overfeeding has a larger effect
A dead animal can affect the system more quickly
Dosing errors are proportionally larger
The NanoReef 80 is a manageable size, but you'll still get the best results by being consistent.
Evaporation & Salinity
This is especially important in small marine tanks.
When water evaporates, the salt stays behind.
That means the aquarium's salinity increases as freshwater evaporates.
Top up evaporation with fresh RO/DI water — not additional saltwater.
Use saltwater for water changes.
Use freshwater for replacing evaporation.
Mixing those two up is an easy way to gradually push salinity too high.
How Often Should I Do Water Changes?
There isn't one perfect schedule for every reef aquarium.
For a NanoReef 80, we'd generally favour smaller, consistent water changes rather than letting the aquarium go for long periods without maintenance.
Your final routine should depend on:
Nitrate
Phosphate
Coral stocking
Feeding
Fish load
Overall water chemistry
Testing should guide maintenance rather than blindly following a calendar.
Simply Fish Recommends
We think the NanoReef 80 fills a really good gap.
If you've always looked at marine aquariums and thought:
"I'd love one, but I don't want to spend thousands building a giant reef tank,"
this gives you a much more achievable entry point.
You get the tank, filtration, heater, skimmer and lighting in one package and can focus your money on the things that actually make the reef interesting — rock, fish and coral.
But we'd also give beginners one warning:
Don't rush it just because the aquarium is small.
Set it up properly, use RO/DI water, get the salinity right, cycle the aquarium, test your water and add livestock gradually.
An 80L reef can look absolutely incredible when it's stocked thoughtfully.
It can also become a headache very quickly if you try to cram a 300L livestock list into it.
