Fijian Ornate Wrasse
The Fijian Ornate Wrasse (Halichoeres claudia) is a spectacular marine fish covered in an intricate combination of red, green, blue and turquoise markings. Its colour and pattern become increasingly impressive as it matures, making it an outstanding feature fish for a well-established reef aquarium.
Juveniles and females display two distinctive eyespots along the dorsal fin, while mature males develop stronger colouration and a more elaborate pattern. Active and constantly exploring, this wrasse brings plenty of movement and personality to the aquarium.

Aquarium Requirements
The Fijian Ornate Wrasse should be housed in an established marine aquarium of at least 300 litres with mature rockwork and plenty of open swimming space.
A soft sand bed approximately 5cm deep is essential. Like other Halichoeres wrasses, this species buries itself beneath the sand to sleep and may also disappear into the substrate when frightened or newly introduced. Avoid coarse or sharp substrates that could damage its body.
A securely fitted lid or mesh cover is also required, as wrasses are powerful and exceptionally capable jumpers.
Temperament and Compatibility
The Fijian Ornate Wrasse is generally peaceful towards unrelated fish but may become territorial towards similar wrasses, particularly as it matures. Introduce it carefully when other wrasses are already established in the aquarium.
It is considered reef safe with caution. While it will not normally damage corals, it may eat small ornamental invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, tiny hermit crabs and feather dusters. It is therefore better suited to reef aquariums where protecting small mobile invertebrates is not the main priority.
Feeding
Offer a varied, protein-rich diet containing appropriately sized marine foods, including:
- Frozen mysis shrimp
- Enriched brine shrimp
- Quality marine pellets
- Chopped seafood
- Frozen marine food blends
- Other meaty carnivore preparations
Feed smaller portions two to three times daily to maintain strong colouration, healthy body condition and consistent activity.

Newly introduced specimens may remain buried beneath the sand for several days while they adjust. This is usually normal, provided the aquarium is secure and water conditions remain stable.
