Neon Green Lobophyllia
The Neon Green Lobophyllia is a bold and fleshy LPS coral that makes an excellent feature piece for the lower areas of a reef aquarium. Often called a “Lobo”, this coral is known for its large, puffy polyps, strong colour, and impressive feeding response.
This neon green variety stands out beautifully under reef lighting, adding a bright splash of colour to the sandbed or lower rockwork. When fully expanded, the fleshy tissue gives the coral a full, inflated appearance and helps hide the stony skeleton underneath.
Lobophyllia are a great option for reef keepers wanting a hardy, eye-catching LPS coral that does not require extreme lighting or flow. They are especially well suited to mixed reef tanks, LPS gardens, and aquariums where a lower-level centerpiece coral is needed.
Why Choose a Neon Green Lobophyllia?
- Bright neon green colour that stands out under marine lighting
- Large, fleshy polyps create a full and impressive display
- Excellent choice for sandbed or lower rock placement
- Hardy LPS coral when kept in stable conditions
- Great feature coral for mixed reef tanks and LPS gardens
- Strong feeding response, making it interesting to watch
Care Requirements
Neon Green Lobophyllia prefer low to moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 75–150 being suitable for most reef aquariums. They are best placed on the sandbed or on a low, stable rock structure where they are not exposed to overly intense light.
Water flow should be low to moderate. The coral needs enough movement to keep debris from settling on its tissue, but not so much that the fleshy polyps are constantly pushed around or forced to retract. Gentle, indirect flow is ideal.
Although Lobophyllia are photosynthetic, they benefit greatly from occasional direct feeding. Offer small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, or suitable LPS coral foods once or twice a week to support growth, colour, and overall health.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: low but detectable
- Phosphate: low but stable
Placement & Compatibility
Lobophyllia can be aggressive toward nearby corals and may extend long feeder or sweeper tentacles, especially at night or when food is present. Leave several inches of space around the coral to prevent it from stinging neighbouring corals.
Avoid placing it directly beside other LPS corals, soft corals, or SPS corals. It should also be placed somewhere stable, as falls or contact with sharp rockwork can damage the fleshy tissue.
