Rainbow Alveopora Fragment
The Rainbow Alveopora Fragment is a beautiful long-polyp stony coral that adds soft movement, colour, and texture to a reef aquarium. Often called a Flowerpot Coral, Alveopora is known for its long, flowing polyps that extend from the skeleton and sway gently in the current.
This rainbow variety displays a mix of colours across the polyp heads, often showing tones of green, pink, yellow, or soft contrasting tips under quality reef lighting. When healthy and fully extended, Rainbow Alveopora creates a soft, flower-like appearance that makes it a stunning addition to LPS gardens, mixed reef tanks, and lower aquascape areas.
Alveopora are related to Goniopora but are generally identified by their 12-tentacled polyps, compared with the 24 tentacles commonly seen on Goniopora. They can be rewarding corals to keep, but they do best in mature, stable reef aquariums where feeding and water quality are consistent.
Why Choose a Rainbow Alveopora Fragment?
- Beautiful flower-like polyps with soft, flowing movement
- Rainbow colouration that stands out under reef lighting
- Great choice for lower rockwork or sandbed placement
- Adds movement without the aggressive sting of many other LPS corals
- Excellent coral for mixed reef tanks and LPS-focused aquariums
- A rewarding option for reef keepers wanting something eye-catching and different
Care Requirements
Rainbow Alveopora prefer low to moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 75–150 being suitable for most reef aquariums. Avoid placing the coral directly under intense lighting too quickly, especially when newly added, as this can cause stress and poor polyp extension.
Water flow should be gentle to moderate and indirect. The polyps should move softly in the current without being blasted or whipped around. If the flow is too strong, Alveopora may stay closed or fail to extend properly.
While Alveopora are photosynthetic, regular feeding is strongly recommended. Offer small particle coral foods, phytoplankton, amino acids, or suitable powdered coral foods several times per week. Consistent feeding can help support polyp extension, colour, and long-term health.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Calcium: 420–440 ppm
- Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
- Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: low but detectable
- Phosphate: low but stable
Placement & Compatibility
Rainbow Alveopora should be placed on the sandbed or lower rockwork where it receives gentle flow and moderate light. Make sure it has enough space around it for its long polyps to extend fully without touching neighbouring corals.
Alveopora are generally peaceful compared with more aggressive LPS corals, but their long polyps can still irritate nearby corals if placed too close. Avoid placing them directly beside Euphyllia, Galaxea, Favia, or other corals with strong sweeper tentacles.
Best For
- Mature reef aquariums
- Mixed reef tanks
- LPS coral gardens
- Sandbed or lower rock placement
- Reef keepers who can provide regular feeding
- Aquarists wanting soft movement and colourful polyp extension
The Rainbow Alveopora Fragment is a stunning coral for adding colour and gentle motion to a reef tank. With stable water parameters, indirect flow, moderate lighting, and consistent feeding, it can become a beautiful feature coral in an established marine aquarium.
