Red and Teal Favia
The Red and Teal Favia is a hardy and colourful LPS coral that adds strong contrast, texture, and structure to a reef aquarium. Favia corals are a long-time favourite in the reef-keeping hobby thanks to their toughness, manageable growth, and attractive patterned polyps.
This variety features a deep red base with contrasting teal oral discs, giving it a sharp colour separation that looks excellent under reef lighting. As it grows, the coral slowly spreads over the rockwork, creating a bumpy, textured surface that adds a natural reef look to the aquarium.
Favia are a great choice for mixed reef tanks, LPS gardens, and reef keepers wanting a reliable coral that can handle standard stable reef conditions. They are generally straightforward to care for, but they do need space from other corals due to their ability to extend sweeper tentacles at night.
Why Choose a Red and Teal Favia?
- Hardy and reliable LPS coral
- Deep red base with contrasting teal centres
- Great colour separation under reef lighting
- Adds texture and structure to rockwork
- Suitable for mixed reef tanks and LPS gardens
- Excellent option for reef keepers wanting a manageable feature coral
Care Requirements
Red and Teal Favia prefer low to moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 75–150 being suitable for most reef aquariums. Placement in the lower to middle sections of the tank is usually best, depending on your lighting strength.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect. The coral needs enough movement to prevent debris from settling on its surface, but not so much that the fleshy polyp tissue is blasted or irritated.
Favia corals are photosynthetic, but they benefit from regular feeding. Offer small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, chopped prawn, or suitable LPS coral foods once or twice a week to support growth, colour, and overall health.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Calcium: 420–440 ppm
- Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
- Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: low but detectable
- Phosphate: low but stable
Placement & Compatibility
Favia can extend sweeper tentacles at night and may sting nearby corals. Allow several inches of space around the colony to prevent damage to neighbouring LPS, soft corals, or SPS corals.
Because Favia often grow by slowly encrusting or forming a solid mound, place it somewhere stable where it has room to expand over time. Lower to middle rockwork is ideal, provided it receives moderate indirect flow and is not crowded by more aggressive corals.
Best For
- Reef aquariums
- Mixed reef tanks
- LPS coral gardens
- Lower to middle rock placement
- Reef keepers wanting a hardy coral
- Aquarists wanting strong colour contrast and texture
The Red and Teal Favia is a solid choice for adding colour, pattern, and structure to a reef tank. With stable water parameters, suitable lighting, moderate indirect flow, and enough space from neighbouring corals, it can become a reliable and attractive feature in your marine aquarium.
