Red Blasto Fragment
The Red Blasto Fragment is a beautiful LPS coral that adds deep, rich colour and soft fleshy texture to a reef aquarium. Blastomussa wellsi has been a favourite in the marine hobby for decades, known for its large inflated polyps, hardy nature, and manageable care requirements.
This red variety is perfect for reef keepers wanting a bold splash of colour without needing high light or aggressive flow. When happy, the polyps inflate into rounded, pillow-like discs with a soft, velvety appearance under aquarium lighting. Over time, new heads can bud from the base of the existing polyps, slowly forming a fuller colony.
Blastomussa corals are generally peaceful and easy to place compared with many other LPS corals. They do not usually send out long sweeper tentacles, making them a great option for mixed reefs, LPS gardens, and lower-light areas of the tank.
Red Blasto Fragments prefer low to moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 75–150. Placement is best on the sandbed or lower rockwork, especially in areas with gentle, indirect flow. Too much direct flow can prevent the polyps from fully inflating, while too much light can cause stress or colour loss.
Although Blastomussa are photosynthetic, they respond very well to occasional target feeding. Offering small meaty coral foods once or twice a week can help support growth, colour, and polyp health.
