Toxic Green Platygyra Brain Coral
The Toxic Green Platygyra Brain Coral is a striking LPS coral known for its maze-like pattern, bold green colour, and tough, textured appearance. Often called a Brain Coral, Platygyra is a great choice for reef keepers wanting a coral that adds structure, contrast, and long-term growth to the aquarium.
This toxic green variety stands out strongly under reef lighting, with bright green valleys and raised ridges creating a classic labyrinth pattern. As the coral grows, the pattern becomes even more impressive, making it a great feature piece for LPS gardens, mixed reef tanks, and lower aquascape placements.
Platygyra are generally hardy when kept in stable conditions, but they do need space. While they may look calm during the day, they can extend long sweeper tentacles at night that may sting nearby corals.
Why Choose a Toxic Green Platygyra Brain Coral?
- Bright toxic green colouration under reef lighting
- Classic maze-like brain coral pattern
- Hardy LPS coral when kept in stable conditions
- Great for sandbed or lower rock placement
- Adds texture and structure to reef aquariums
- Excellent choice for LPS gardens and mixed reef tanks
Care Requirements
Toxic Green Platygyra Brain Corals prefer moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 100–200 being suitable in most reef aquariums. Placement on the sandbed or lower rockwork is usually best, especially when introducing the coral to a new system.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect. The flow needs to be strong enough to stop detritus settling on the coral’s surface, but not so strong that the tissue is blasted or irritated.
Like many LPS corals, Platygyra are photosynthetic but can benefit from occasional feeding. Target feed small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, or suitable LPS coral foods once a week to support growth, colour, and overall condition.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Calcium: 420–440 ppm
- Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
- Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: low but detectable
- Phosphate: low but stable
Placement & Compatibility
Platygyra Brain Corals can be aggressive at night and may extend long sweeper tentacles. Give this coral plenty of space from neighbouring corals to avoid stinging and tissue damage.
Avoid placing it too close to other LPS corals, soft corals, or SPS corals. A stable position on the sandbed or lower rock structure is ideal, where it can receive moderate light, indirect flow, and room to grow.
