War Coral Favities
The War Coral Favities is a hardy and colourful LPS coral that brings bold contrast, texture, and classic reef character to a marine aquarium. Known for its maze-like surface and striking colour patterns, War Coral is a great choice for reef keepers wanting a tough, eye-catching coral that can slowly encrust across rockwork.
This coral gets its name from the way its colours often appear to compete across the colony, with contrasting tones around the edges of each polyp. The fused corallites create an undulating, brain-like pattern that looks fantastic under reef lighting and adds a strong visual texture to the lower or middle areas of the aquascape.
Favities corals are generally hardy when kept in stable conditions, making them a popular choice for mixed reef tanks and LPS coral gardens. However, they can be aggressive, especially at night, so thoughtful placement is important.
Why Choose a War Coral Favities?
- Hardy and colourful LPS coral
- Distinctive maze-like texture and fused corallites
- Great contrast under reef lighting
- Encrusting growth habit that spreads over rockwork
- Excellent for mixed reefs and LPS gardens
- Manageable care requirements in a stable reef tank
Care Requirements
War Coral Favities prefer moderate lighting, with a PAR range of around 75–150 being suitable for most reef aquariums. Placement in the lower to middle sections of the tank is usually best, depending on your lighting strength and aquascape.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect. The coral needs enough movement to prevent detritus from settling on its surface, but not so much that the fleshy tissue is constantly blasted or irritated.
War Coral is photosynthetic, but it will benefit from regular feeding. Offer small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, or suitable LPS coral foods once or twice a week to support growth, colour, and overall health.
Recommended Water Parameters
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
- Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: low but detectable
- Phosphate: low but stable
Placement & Compatibility
War Coral Favities can be aggressive and may extend long sweeper tentacles at night. These can sting nearby corals, so it is important to leave several inches of clear space around the colony.
Because it is an encrusting coral, place it on a rock where it has room to spread without growing directly into neighbouring corals. Avoid placing it too close to other LPS corals, soft corals, SPS corals, or slower-growing corals that may be damaged by contact or sweepers.
Best For
- Reef aquariums
- Mixed reef tanks
- LPS coral gardens
- Lower to middle rock placement

The War Coral Favities is a strong choice for adding colour and structure to a reef aquarium. With stable water parameters, moderate lighting, indirect flow, and enough space from other corals, it can become a bold and reliable feature in your marine tank.
