A powerful light running for six hours can provide considerably more light than a weak light running for ten hours. You therefore need to consider both duration and intensity.
Why aquarium lights should not stay on all day
Aquarium plants need light for photosynthesis, but they cannot use unlimited light.
When an aquarium receives more light than its plants can effectively use, algae often takes advantage of the excess.
Leaving aquarium lights on for ten, twelve or fourteen hours can contribute to:
- Green algae on the glass
