If you're unsure which model you need, don't just choose the pump with the biggest litres-per-hour number. Pond volume, required flow and the height you're pumping the water all matter.

What Does Maximum Head Height Mean?
This catches a lot of people out.
Maximum head height is not the height where the pump still produces its full advertised flow.
If a pump is rated at:
3,500L/hr with a 3.4m maximum head
that does not mean it delivers 3,500L/hr at 3.4m.
The flow rate reduces as the pump has to push water higher and overcome more resistance.
At the maximum head height, usable flow is approaching zero.
So if you're pumping water:
you need to allow for flow loss.
Don't Size a Pump Using Pond Volume Alone
A common rule of thumb is to circulate a pond's volume approximately once every 1–2 hours, but that is only a starting point.
A 2,000L decorative pond with no fish has very different requirements from a 2,000L heavily stocked Goldfish pond.
You also need to consider:
If your pond filter specifies a recommended flow range, use that requirement as part of your pump selection.
Example
Say you have a:
2,000L Goldfish pond
and want the pond volume circulating roughly once per hour.
You might initially think:
"Easy — I need a 2,000L/hr pump."
But if the pump has to push water:
a pump rated at 2,000L/hr may deliver substantially less than that in the real installation.
In that situation, we'd generally give ourselves some headroom rather than selecting a pump that only just meets the theoretical requirement.
Pond Pump for a Waterfall
Waterfalls generally require more flow than people expect.
A tiny pump may technically get water to the top, but you could end up with:
a sad little trickle
instead of an actual waterfall.
When sizing for a waterfall, consider:
The higher and wider the waterfall, the more pump capacity you generally need.
If you're unsure, we'd rather calculate it with you before you buy than sell you a pump that leaves you disappointed.
Pond Pump for Filtration
If you're using the Pondmaster to supply a pond filter, check the filter manufacturer's recommended flow rate.
Too little flow may mean the filtration system isn't receiving enough water.
Too much flow can also be a problem if water passes through the filter faster than the system is designed to handle.
The goal isn't simply:
biggest pump possible.
The pump and filter need to work together.

How Do I Work Out My Pond Volume?
For a basic rectangular pond:
Length × Width × Average Depth = Pond Volume
If measuring in metres:
Length × Width × Depth × 1,000 = approximate litres
For example:
2m × 1.5m × 0.6m × 1,000 = approximately 1,800L
Irregular ponds are harder to calculate exactly, so use an average width and average depth rather than simply measuring the deepest point.

Installation
Before installation:

A pump itself mainly moves water.
However, when that water movement creates surface agitation, a fountain or waterfall, it can improve gas exchange between the pond water and atmosphere.
This can be particularly useful as pond temperatures rise.

The moment you start pushing water uphill and through hoses, fittings and filtration, flow begins to drop.

Work out what you need the pump to do first, then choose the model.
For a little fountain, you don't need a monster.
For a filtration system or waterfall with significant head height, don't buy a pump that only just meets your theoretical flow requirement.

There isn't one fixed interval. Check it whenever flow noticeably reduces and inspect it periodically during periods of heavy pond use.
Does a pond pump oxygenate the water?
Water movement itself doesn't inject oxygen, but fountains, waterfalls and surface agitation can improve gas exchange.
Should I run my pond pump continuously?
For pumps supplying biological filtration, continuous operation is generally preferable because the filter relies on regular water flow. Other applications such as purely decorative fountains may be operated differently.
